The rest of the dancers have gone backstage. I’m the only one left in the dressing room, hiding out in my stall with the privacy curtain drawn. I need some time alone after that dance.

This isn’t a stage persona when I’m with Nox. I can’t put on a costume and become someone else around her. She knows the gritty truth of where I came from and who I want to be.

What was she doing here, and why did she disappear? How long will it take me to kick the habit of looking around for her when our time together is over?

Leaning back against the plywood divider wall, I close my eyes and consider sneaking out for a few minutes to smoke a joint in the parking lot.

The main door opens. The sharp click-clack of stilettos tells me another dancer has arrived.

“Everyone is backstage,” I shout over the chorus of Thriller. “I’ll be there in a few minutes.”

“But I’m looking for you, Natalia.”

That deep voice is like smoke seeping through the thick blue fabric hanging between us. Black coffin-shaped fingernails poke past the edge of the material, pushing the curtain aside.

Nox is in her human form, her dark hair falling over one of her eyes.

She’s wearing a shiny black dress that hugs her curves. Her legs are long enough to leave a few inches of skin exposed between the short hemline and her thigh-high boots. She’s the hottest woman I’ve ever seen, but I don’t know how anyone can look at her for more than a few seconds without realizing she’s not entirely human.

Even with her slim fingers and pretty smile, she looks like she could tear someone’s heart out and crush it with her heel. I grab her wrist and pull her into the stall with me, closing the curtain behind her.

“How’d you get in here?”

“I have my ways.” Shadows swim behind her hair. “Are you mad that I came?”

“No.” The vulnerability of letting her watch me dance scares me, but I don’t want to shut her out. “I’m not mad. Just surprised. I almost tripped over myself when I saw you out there.”

“I couldn’t tell. You didn’t miss a beat.” She touches the ruffled edge of my skirt. In this form, it’s easy to tell that she’s staring. “I wasn’t going to come tonight, but I felt your fear earlier. I wanted to check on you.”

Her nostrils flare as if she’s recalling the scent of my terror.

“And you can appear wherever I am?”

“I can find you anywhere,” she answers, pressing her fingers to a spot below her ribs. The bond pulses faintly between us. It’s an invisible shadow unspooling from my abdomen, connecting me to her. “What scared you?”

“I thought my cousins were here, but it was all a misunderstanding,” I explain. “My ex showed up to talk to me.”

Her eyes narrow with unmistakable fury.

“Did he try to start some shit with you?”

“No. My friend wouldn’t let him in the club. I told him he’d have to wait.”

Her only response is a light growl.
